Since 2009 the Witten Institute for Family Business (WIFU) invites renowned international researchers to the lecture series at Witten/Herdecke University.

Family business research conveys very complex research questions which often demand the involvement of different scientific disciplines. Especially family business research moves within a “paradox of relevance and rigour”. Research that follows strict rules and publishes exact data is mainly interesting for a small exclusive circle of scientists. By contrast, research that aims at relevance is oftentimes scientifically unspecific and its result, mainly soft and qualitative data, is often only relevant for practice, but irrelevant for science. Under the slogan “Family Business Research between Scientific Rigour and Entrepreneurial Relevance” the lecture series gives an insight into the range of national and international family business research and shows that the discrepancy between rigour and relevance is not inevitably necessary.

Lectures are given in English or German and dealt among others with the following topics: “Family Businesses in Europe: Future challenges and Fields of Action for Politics”, “Family Wars” and “Emotional Value: Corporate Ownership beyond the financial Paradigm”. We invited leading researchers from Spain, Austria, the UK, Sweden and Switzerland.

We do not only invite an expert audience only to our lecture series but interested people from all over. The lectures take place on the premises of Witten/Herdecke University, participation is free of charge.
