Since 1998 the Witten Institute for Family Business (WIFU) is a pioneer of the German-speaking research regarding family businesses and business families.

The research area “Family Business” is characterized by a variety of scientific disciplines, methods and questions. This variety is due to the fact that family enterprises are a highly complex object of research.

The WIFU meets this challenge by considering three perspectives, namely business administration, psychology/sociology and law. The major elements of a family enterprise – the family, the enterprise and the associates – are to be understood as interconnected systems which have to be examined in detail but above all with respect to its reciprocal effect. The interdisciplinary approach of the WIFU makes it possible to capture the particularities of this system and their interaction.
